In this graffiti in the Salt Tower, the “E” within the heart stands for Elizabeth Tudor. The grafitti was carved by Giovanni Battista Castiglione, Italian tutor to Elizabeth from 1544 onward, who was imprisoned in the Tower by Queen Mary I in 1556. He survived, and upon Elizabeth's accession to the throne in 1558, Castiglione was made a Groom of the Privy Chamber, a position he held until right before his death.
