Cologne Cathedral, the High Cathedral of Saints Peter and Mary, begun 1248, halted 1473, unfinished. Work restarted in the 19th c. completed, 1880. Being very near to the railway station, suffered fourteen bomb hits during WW II. Did not collapse, remained standing in the flattened city. The spires said to have been used as a navigational landmark by Allied aircraft, which may be why the cathedral was not destroyed. (shown here with one spire scaffolded to be cleaned) uncredited
