These are the Dory Boats that are famous in Pacific City. You launch them straight into the surf instead of a bay. I've been out on a dory boat fishing several times while I've lived here.

One of the things we did on our trip to Oregon this year was head over to the coast and up to Depoe Bay to take a whale watching tour looking to see the migrating grey whales. We were not disappointed! We saw whales within 10-15 minutes of leaving the Depoe Bay harbor and spent the next hour watching two groups of whales. It's a great experience to see these huge creatures up close. Highly recommended!

Depoe Bay, OR: Oregon's whale migration peaks in December. But some smart gray whales live all year in Depoe Bay. For a nose-to-blowhole encounter, book a 90-minute trip with Whale Research EcoExcursions ($40; 541/912-6734). For a splurge night near the big guys, book a room at cliffside Whale Cove Inn ($395; whalecoveinn.com) and slurp garlicky cioppino at Tidal Raves ($$; 279 N.W. U.S. 101; 541/765-2995), where a window seat lets you whale-watch. Photo: Carrie Newell, Sunset.com
