In 98 they numbered the moose inside the Anchorage "bowl" at approx 300 in the summer but in the winter that population grows to about 1000 or so, as the snow drives them down out of the Chugach Mountains East of Town. Fish n Game says they reached a peak in 1994 to about 2100 and may be about to peak again. With about 60 Brown Bear and 250 Black Bear living in the area. Dozens of Dahl Sheep in Chugach State Park and 500 Mt Goats. Wild Baby!
The well traveled paths by bears get signed. I recommend bearbells for noise because the last thing you want to do is startle a brown bear. I start bringing bear spray also about now as soon the salmon will be in the creek.
