The Hay Wain, John Constable, 1821, National Gallery of Art, London I took a humanities class in college and this is one of the pieces we had to know. The way I remembered the name of the painting and who painted it was that I imagined myself standing on the edge of the water yelling to the man, "Hey Wayne, the Constable needs you!" Then about 6 months after taking the class I went on a humanities tour of Europe and our first stop was the National Gallery of Art in London. I got to see this picture I studied and knew the name and artist. It was a real turning point in my love of museums and art.

Cityscape I, 1963, by Richard Diebenkorn, American Abstract Expressionist. This piece is clearly not very abstract. This artist would go between these more literal translations to far more abstract landscapes in his work. I've pinned a piece under Abstract Expressionism that fits that genre well, so you get the scope of his work. This piece reminds me of early Hopper, a clear inspiration. Check out the California sunshine in this piece. One of the reasons why I like it.
