How to Clean and Maintain a Smelly Front Loading Washing Machine

Once a month, I add a cup of Distilled White Vinegar & 1 Cup of Baking Soda (adding both neutralizes the pH but the bubbling action gently scrubs any debris you can’t get to inside the drum) directly into the drum and use HOT water for washing. Then, I add about ½ cup of vinegar into the fabric softener compartment and ½ cup of baking soda into the detergent compartment.

Mix baking soda with TBS of fabric softener and spread on mattress every one or two months. Leave on an hour and vacuum off. Kills dust mites and freshens the mattress. THIS WAS AMAZING!! Use snuggle fabric softener and the mattress will smell great.

Top 10 Time-Saving, MacGyver-Style Cleaning Tricks

... Refresh towels - Over time, towels build up detergent and fabric softener, leaving them unable to absorb as much water and smelling funky. Recharge them by washing them once with hot water and 1cup vinegar, then a 2nd time with hot water and half cup baking soda. This strips the residue and leaves them fresh and able to absorb more water again. Works like a charm! #greencleaning

A lighter load

DIY fabric softener: To make your fabric softener from scratch, you will need 6 cups of water, 2 cups of hair conditioner and 3 cups of white vinegar. You can add a drop of essential oils if you wish (a favorite is lavender, to create the same scent as Downy softener). Combine all of the ingredients in a container. Use the mixture directly in your fabric softener dispenser, or dip a washcloth into your mix, ring it out, and put it into the dryer with newly washed clothes.
