A late 17th century early 18th century Milanese commode
An extraordinary and rare late 17th early 18th century Milanese ebonized fruitwood four drawer commode. The commode with all original iron hardware including handles, keyhole escutcheons and locks. The 'C' curved sides are decorated the same. Inside of each drawer are remnants of old hand painted paper. Wonderful and rich rubbed patina throughout. Museum quality.
It's the "sign of the whale" trade sign featuring a three dimensional carved antiqued white whale spouting water (thin iron rods) and whimsical harpoon above. Hangs from black painted wood sign bracket. Another great marine folk art creation by Jac Patricia Johnson! Measures 31" wide x 30" high overall.
