A member of "1er Régiment des chevaux-légers [polonais] de la Garde Impériale." (Wojciech Kossak, 1910, oil on canvas). This splendid regiment of Polish lancers, one of the finest to ever mount horse, accompanied Napoleon as a part of his Guard from 1807 on, and is most famous for their charge at the Battle of Somosierra (1808). Always faithful and loyal to Napoleon, even after Poland had been overrun, members accompanied their Emperor into exile in 1814, and to Waterloo in 1815.
