The Call of the Wild is yet another violent novel from Jack London. Despite White Fang being better known in recent times, owing to the success of the Disney movie, Call of the Wild has been cited by some as his best work. Again, the protagonist is an animal - a dog named Buck who is forced into the brutal life of a sled dog.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card: an excellent piece of science fiction that does not underestimate its young audience. This book raises a lot of very good questions about morality, human nature, and the relativity of age, while also kicking a lot of people in the face and blowing some stuff up.
