During WWII, the people of Paris gathered to pack up the entire contents of the Louvre to prevent Hitler and the Nazis from pillaging the artwork as they had done in Vienna, Cracow, Warsaw, and other European cities.  The artwork was hidden in various châteaus in the French countryside.  The Mona Lisa was hidden at the Château de Cheverny with a Louvre curator's family until 1945.
