The Popocatépetl (smoking mountain) is the most famous volcano in Mexico. The volcano is more than 5400 meters high and lies 70 kilometers southeast of the capital Mexico City, with 21 million inhabitants one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world. Mexicans affectionately call their highest mountain Popo. Mexico has about three thousand volcanoes, but this is one of the most restless volcanoes in the country. In the past 500 years there were more than 15 major eruptions.
