Walking dress, Mme. Cridon, Paris, 1885. Wool & silk. Bodice has opening in front to reveal underbodice resembling a man’s waistcoat, which is attached to the outer jacket at side seam. Bustle skirt with draped overskirt; steel hoops & tapes in back of underskirt to pull it into shape over bustle pad. Hem reaches top of wearer’s shoes, making it easier to walk in than a trained skirt. Victoria & Albert Museum
