If you need your paint job to be durable, go with polycrylic. Polycrylic is great because it's durable like Polyurethane, but it doesn't yellow over time and it's really low-odor. To apply your polycrylic, just brush it on with a high quality paint brush. I did 2 coats, allowing it to dry for several hours in between.

Simple and Cheap Homemade Method to Refinish Wooden Furniture Olive or Vegetable Oil – About ¾ cup White or Apple Cider Vinegar – About ¼ cup Just mix together and dip a rag into the mixture. Then, just wipe your furniture down with it.

To refinish old dry wood simply sand and wash with warm soapy water. Let the wood dry out. Use a clean dry rag to apply a thin coat of coconut oil. Let sit for 5 minutes; then buff. Repeat as needed. Finish with boot polish (wax based).
