La Reproduction Interdite (1937). Rene’ Magritte (1898-1967). Surrealism. Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. Rotterdam. Surrealist patron Edward James allowed Magritte to stay rent free in his London home and paint. James is featured in La Reproduction Interdite, an oil painting also known as Not to be Reproduced. During 1947-48, Magritte lived by producing fake Picassos, Braques and Chiricos, a fraudulent repertoire he was later to expand to forged banknotes during the lean postwar period.

Rene Magritte / la reproduction interdite. Tim Akkerman (dutch singer-songwriter and former member of Di-Rect) made a song called Who's this man, inspired by this painting. You can find it on YouTube: Art Tracks Tim Akkerman Who's that man. It is a wonderful song.
