35 things to do in Australia this summer: Do the Maria Island Walk (Tas) The picturesque four-day, easy-to-moderate guided walking holiday takes place just a few kilometres off the east coast of Tasmania on the heritage-listed Maria Island. At the end of each day – after visiting beautiful beaches, wandering through blue gum forests, swimming in tranquil waters and watching native wildlife – walkers are treated to luxury accommodation at a different wilderness camp. Here is a great photo taken by Karen Beechey at Miena which is a small town by the Great Lake in the Central Highlands of Tasmania (and a favourite destination for Karen and Rob.) The Aboriginal name, pronounced 'my-enna' translates to 'lagoon-like' and the main attraction to this area is the trout fishing. The Great Lake also has the distinction of being the highest lake in Australia.
