Louis XVI's sister, Madame Elisabeth, deliberately chose to accept imprisonment with her brother and his family rather than escape France with their aunts. Marie Antoinette addressed her last letter to Elisabeth, believing that she still had custody of her children. Elisabeth, too, was eventually guillotined.
