Using sashing between the blocks the same color as background helps to distinguish the pattern of the individual blocks. They seem to stand out and float.
Okay, I usually zero in on piecing, but the quilting on this is REALLY cool. I love this idea of only quilting in the white/negative areas... it adds so much texture by making the colored squares "puffy!"
