The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America..... Absolutely my favorite book! Its incredible :)
So did not want to read this when my book club selected it! I did not want to delve in the world of a serial killer at all. Here's the thing, though, the alternating chapters of the serial killer and the enormous task of the architects of the 1893 Chicago World Fair were each riveting and wonderful in their own ways. The book works as a whole, and is incredibly well written and suspenseful.
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. A non-fiction book that details parallel stories of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (it's construction and a serial killer.) Paired w/Mollydooker Carnival of Love 2009, Shiraz.

Great book - read it before I went to Chicago. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson: Narrative history of Chicago in the 1890's with the dual biographies of Daniel Hudson Burnham, architect of the World's Fair of 1893 and Dr. H.H. Holmes, a psychopath who ran a killing chamber in a hotel nearby. Thanks to @Jenn Huss. #Chicago #Daniel_Hudson_Burnham #H-H-Holmes #The_Devil_in_the_White_City Erki_Larson

With "Isaac" out in the Atlantic, it occurs me to recommend a one of the best books having to do with weather -- Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson. It is the gripping story of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane which is the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. While non-fiction, it is written in the style of a novel. I liked that style so much I used it (along with The Right Stuff and Rocket Boys) as a style template for Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather. Isaac's Storm has a 4.5-star rating (it should be 5!) at Amazon. Warnings has a 5-star rating. If you are interested in learning about more modern forecasting and more recent hurricanes, Warnings will fill the bill.

The Cloud of Unknowing is an anonymous work of Christian mysticism written in Middle English in the latter half of the 14th century. The text is a spiritual guide on contemplative prayer in the late Middle Ages. The underlying message of this work proposes that the only way to truly "know" God is to abandon all preconceived notions and beliefs or “knowledge” about God and be courageous enough to surrender your mind and ego to the realm of "unknowing". - Wikipedia

Nothing says ”back to school” quite like The Malice of Fortune, a hefty novel about the politics of 16th-century Italy. Luckily, this one reads like a pulpy mystery. Inspired by the real-life assassination of Juan Borgia, an illegitimate son of Pope Alexander VI, and a series of serial-killer murders, the story follows Borgia’s mistress Damiata and Niccolò Machiavelli, future author of The Prince, as they investigate these crimes with help from Leonardo da Vinci, who works for the Pope’s surviving son, Valentino.
Author Michael Ennis discusses how he captured dialogue between Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli for his coming historical thriller, "The Malice of Fortune."

The novel opens in Dante’s beloved city, Florence, where Robert Langdon, professor of Religious Symbology at Harvard wakes up in a hospital bed suffering from (you guessed it) amnesia. And while he’ll need to piece together what has happened to him — trust me, it’s a lot — he is also being pursued by an assassin sent by a shadowy international organization that does the dirty work of the rich and powerful.
Inferno by Dan Brown. I am normally a fan of Brown's books, but not this one. It was very confusing and just didn't flow well. The plot, in my mind, was just melodramatic nonsense and the entire book seemed like it was written and pushed out just to make sales.
