Abandoned Asylum - Manteno State Hospital, Manteno, Illinois - Black and White Photography Print 4x5, 8x10
Manteno State Hospital opened in 1930, and its population peaked in 1954 with just over 8,000 patients. Abandoned since closing in 1985. The writing in this room relays the story of Genevieve Pilarski, whose name's written in the tub on the upper left. She was a former patient who underwent everything from hydrotherapy and a lobotomy, to placement in an experimental research ward.
Strange Geographies: The Happy, Haunted Island of Poveglia
Poveglia- a small off-limits to visitors island off of the coast of Italy. It has been used as: a dumping ground for bodies during the plague, a military/government fortification, and weirdly enough, retirement homes. Local legend says that it is now entirely empty save for the ghost of a doctor who once ran a Shutter Island-style mental hospital there.
