    Stretching keeps the muscles long and lean, so it's an important part of building a ballet dancer's thin body shape, Bowers says. How to do it: Lay on your back and lift one leg straight up. Use your hands to pull the ankle gently toward your head. Work toward stretching your knee all the way straight over time. Repeat on the other leg.

    dancers' feet after 6 hrs of pointe rehearsal. When I was on Pointe(I learned ballet from Gertrude Dolan-Boston), all of my toenails turned black and blue then one by one fell off. I remember it as being very painful. However, even at the young age of seven, we learned to smile amidst the pain. -jbw
