    While no one can say for sure who invented these beauties, they are often attributed to Dr. Nathaniel Ward. In 1827, Ward studied moths and caterpillars in covered jars for observation. As time went on, some ferns sprouted in one of the glass containers–a very curious thing–as Ward had been unsuccessful in planting ferns in his own garden. He suspected this was due to the fact that London air was polluted, and thus prevented the growth of his plants. Dr. Ward placed the jar outside the window...
