Sir Thomas Lawrence - Portrait of Arthur Atherley as an Etonian c. 1791 oil on canvas Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet (1778–1829) was a Cornish chemist and inventor. In this 1821 portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence, Davy is portrayed in fashionable Regency dress: a high white stock and white waistcoat with a black jacket and matching overcoat, the latter open to reveal a silk lining. He also wears gray trousers with a blue ribbon at the waist and kidskin gloves. Notice also the miner’s safety lamp near his hand (Davy’s design).
