A local official, worried the border was unprotected, paid for the trench with his own money.

Ukraine is preparing to withdraw its soldiers and their families from Crimea, officials in Kiev announced Wednesday. Speaking at a press conference, Andriy Parubiy, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Ukraine, said that “we are working on a plan to quickly and effectively transport not only military servicemen but also their families to the territory of mainland Ukraine.”
White House Blocks Visas for Some Tied to Ukraine Crisis
The Obama administration said Thursday that it will deny visas to people responsible for “threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” toughening its response to Russia after its invasion of the Crimean peninsula.
