Dogfight (1991) I cannot say enough about this movie. It is definitely a lost gem and it's too bad that it wasn't appreciated in it's time. I only stumbled upon it because I went through a lengthy River Phoenix phase. (I don't think this "phase" will ever pass.) When you discover an amazing artist, you can't help but gobble up every piece of their work. This film is authentic, heartbreaking and beautiful. It reminds me of indie films from today. Please check it out when you get the chance…

I first met River Phoenix in 1990 in Gainesville, Florida. I’d flown down from New York City. I was shooting him for a magazine. I don’t remember which one. His family had this beautiful wild piece of land on the edge of a swamp. I was there for two days. We smoked pot, drank beer, climbed up to his tree house, swung on a rope, bounced on his trampoline and went on an alligator hunt just to spot one and we did.

“He’s become a kind of mystical being in people’s lives, somebody that inspires them. Not because of his tragedy, but because of that quality that he had, which was always spiritual, so when you see him, that magical thing didn’t die with him.” ~ William Richert (director of Little Nikita)
