The Sandhills take up nearly 20,000 square miles (more than 50,000 square kilometers) in northern Nebraska. Once covered in wind-blown dunes of loose sand, now the region is somewhat grassy, and cattle ranchers have staked out territories for grazing among the sloping acres. Traditionally, the Sandhills have been prone to drought, and there are ecosystem management efforts underway to protect the area's ecology and hydrological status.
