My 2nd grade artists have been learning about Egypt. I was inspired by Megan, at The Elementary Art Room, who told be about a project she did on Britto's pyramid. I have been wanting to do a project with the contemporary artist Romero Britto for a while, but I had no idea that he had created large scale pyramids for London's Tutankamen exhibit. I was excited to try to tie together the old and the new. Studnets began by drawing their pyramids on white tagboard. We drew the simple pyramid shape together and then I told them they could pick what Egyptain symbols they wanted to add. I had handouts of differnet Egyptain symbols for students to refer to. I especially like Ralph Masiello's Ancient Egypt Drawing Book I also showed students some of Britto's sketches... The studnets drew their designs, added sharpie then colored with flurescent markes. When then finshed they cut out thier pyramid and glued it to black paper. Finally they added hieroglyphics of their name with gel markers and me added some glitter.
Willow is a lovely childrens picture book about art and creativity. This book shares the story of a free-spirited girl named willow and her art teacher.

A clever picture book that features fourteen poems about punctuation. Conventions A great picture book to use as a model when teaching conventions. Read aloud this book with gusto and children are sure to find punctuation exciting! Lesson Idea: After reading aloud this book, have children discuss the different forms of punctuation. Have each child choose one and write their own poem about it. Compile the poems into a class punctuation book to use as a resource when children are editing other students' work.
Punctuation marks come alive in this clever picture book featuring fourteen playful poems.
This week, we are working on a hard skill for some kiddos...quotations. They have such a hard time figuring out where the darn things go..before the period, after the period, and the comma really throws them for a loop. Today, I had the kids write a sentence on a sentence strip with elbow macaroni as the commas and quotation marks. We also did this rhyming poem from the book "Punctuation Celebration." If you don't have it, you should definitely check it out from Scholastic. There are cute poems for all types of punctuation. I've made this resource to practice this skill. I am going to cut them in half so each child gets a different person. There are 11 different pages so that makes enough for 22 kids. There are two version available. One with the quotes already added and one where the kids need to add the quotes themselves. Click here to download the pages. Quotation marks No quotation marks We are also working on changing a y to an i and adding es when we do irregular plurals. I made a sign for my kids to help them remember. Click on the picture to download. I've also had some questions about how I display my standards. Here are a couple of photos from my classroom. I use a little pocket chart to display the teacher standards. We have to have these posted every day. I use part of my whiteboard for the student cards. I use Stikki Clips to hold the cards up. This makes it easy to change them out everyday. I've also posted the Tennessee standards in reading and math as they go along with the Treasures series and the enVision math series. I've had many requests for these because they are more detailed than the common core standards. You can find them in my TPT store. Have a great Tuesday!

Those looking for an attractive book on Picasso for young readers should check out Jonah Winter's picture book, Just Behave, Pablo Picasso! This book focuses on the early years of Picasso's career. Recommended for ages 7-12. From The Fourth Musketeer.

Just Behave, Pablo Picasso! Written by Jonah Winter and illustrated by Kevin Hawkes: This picture book biography does not give its readers many details about Picasso's life; rather, it focuses on his art, his always evolving style and the strength of character it took to make the art he wanted to make. He didn't paint to earn a living. He painted what inspired his thinking, his view of the world he was living in and introduced a totally new artistic style to that world.
Great art book for kids!

Art. Eat. Tie Dye. Repeat.: 2nd Grade Cubism Picasso Faces
Just Behave, Pablo Picasso! written by Jonah Winter; pictures by Kevin Hawkes 2012 (Arthur A. Levine Books) Source: Orange County Public Library Check out Nonfiction Monday at Ana's Nonfiction Blog Mercurial is a word that I thought about after reading this fantastic picture book biography of Pablo Picasso. He was changeable and quick witted. He wasn't afraid to stretch his talents and not play it safe. In the beginning of the book, Pablo is pictured as bursting through a tranquil landscape painting like a football player through a banner. The point of the spread is that Pablo was going to challenge conventional thinking about painting with his attitude and talent. It is a brilliant visual idea by Jonah Winter and Kevin Hawkes. Young Pablo moved through different styles while showing his way above average painting ability. It was a rose-colored painting that caught the eye of a gallery owner. He asked for two hundred more similar paintings and this made Pablo a star. Bored with rose-colored paintings, he saw a display of African masks in a Paris museum. This inspired Pablo to create a new painting that is unlike the conventional ones of the time. When he displayed it, the "experts" hated the painting. They wanted him to go back to his more traditional paintings. Pablo didn't listen and decided to go even further down the path he chose. After he is told by his wife that his painting didn't make sense, he responded that he was living in a world that didn't make sense. Ignoring the pleas of the Paris art world, Pablo created Girl with a Mandolin which set him apart as a courageous artist who had ushered in the modern era with his original work in the cubist genre. Just Behave, Pablo Picasso is not a simple retelling of a period in Pablo Picasso's life. Jonah Winter infuses this biography with a distinct voice that is refreshing for nonfiction. It's like he is sitting right next to you and having a vibrant conversation instead of simply giving a dry recitation of Picasso information. Children will connect with this style of storytelling and hopefully understand that they too have their own unique voices that can come out in their writing. Kevin Hawkes's pictures are spectacular. He captures Picasso's personality while introducing readers to Picasso's different styles. This book is a great book to use to teach children to be themselves in their work and to not be afraid to try something different. It has received three starred reviews, so it will be on several Best of 2012 lists at the end of the year. Other reviews: True Tales and a Cherry On Top Waking Brain Cells A Picture Book A Day
