Staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) is a wonderful, medium sized native shrub. This shrub forms large thickets via underground rhizomes. It grows from 6 to 15 feet tall. The leaves are deeply lobed, pale green in summer, turning brilliant shades of red and orange in the fall. It is drought tolerant and great for native borders. The berries are also edible and can be used for jelly-making. ‘Tiger Eyes’ is a common cultivar.
Shade gardens | Astilbe hybrids Feathery, plumelike flowers have an airy quality; they come in shades of pink, salmon, lavender, red, and white above fernlike foliage. A mainstay of shaded perennial borders, they’re also great beside garden pools, along shaded paths, and in pots. Give them moist, rich soil.
