30th. July 1915, The Battle of Hooge. Germans put their new weapon, the flammenwerfer, or flamethrower, to devastating use against the Allies. 11 days prior, British infantry had captured the German-occupied village of Hooge, near Ypres, by detonating a large mine. Using flamethrowers to great effect, with machine guns, trench mortars and grenades, the Germans reclaimed their positions, pushing the British forces back to their 2nd trench.
