Large (Wikimedia) As the Walker Art Gallery puts it, Walter Dendy Sadler—in his 1882 painting Friday—"shows Dominican monks entertaining two Franciscans to a meal.“ A fresh tablecloth has been pulled out for the occasion, the crisp creases from its folds lending texture to the table surface. The slightly elevated vantage point leaves a clear view of the table’s lovely spread—including delicate glass containers of vinegar an olive oil, plenty of wine, some lovely fruit, and a vast array of seafood. After all, today is Friday, so meat is—both literally and figuratively—off the table. The pendant to this painting, Thursday, shows the Franciscan monks catching the fish in preparation for the occasion. (Seems like a pretty good deal for the Dominican monks.)
