his large intaglio gem shows a satyr, a follower of the wine god Bacchus. His tail indicates his half-animal nature and behaviour. He peers searchingly into a drinking bowl to see whether there is any wine left. Leaning on his staff, he tries to keep his balance. This gem was carved from red carnelian and dates from the early Roman Empire (1st or 2nd century AD).
