Alice In Wonderland: Vogue styled by Grace Coddington. Model: Natalia Vodianova Grace Coddington has been in and around fashion for more than five decades, first as a successful model in the 1960’s, and later as a stylist and fashion editor for the British and American Vogue. She is currently the creative director of the latter. Coddington came into the public eye in 2009 with the release of The September Issue, a candid documentary about the making of the September 2007 issue of Vogue. The film’s framing of the power play between Wintour and Coddington transformed her into a fashion hero because, first, she appears to fight so hard against trends and commercialism in her pursuit of beauty. And secondly because she’s the only person who answers back to Anna. Coddington was a top model and one of the most-photographed faces of the Swinging Sixties. She modeled minis for Mary Quant and cutting-edge hairstyles for Vidal Sassoon, who gave her a radical geometric bob that catapulted them both to fame. She was a “huge celebrity in that world, an incredible beauty,” Wintour, Vogue’s editor in chief, once recalled. “I was in awe of her.” At the age of 26, she was in car accident that left her disfigured. She later had plastic surgery to have her face reconstructed. Two years after the accident, at the age of 28, she was interviewed by British Vogue’s Editor, Beatrix Miller, and was employed as a Junior Editor. After nineteen years as Photo Editor with British Vogue, she moved to New York to work for Calvin Klein. In July 1988, she joined American Vogue, where she remains the magazine’s creative director. “She’s a storyteller,” explains US Vogue’s contributing editor Sarah Mower. “And I’ve concluded in looking through years of her work that the story is about Grace. She really cares what the clothes look like, but far more important to her is ‘feeling the girl’ in the picture, her character, her escapades, her sense of humor. Often Grace transcends fashion, quite literally – she has designers make special dresses to costume her fantasy shoots, rather than simply documenting the collections du jour.” Karl Lagerfeld called her a genius. Wintour Agrees.
