Erasmus Darwin was an English physician & a key thinker of the Midlands Enlightenment. He was a natural philosopher, physiologist, slave trade abolitionist, inventor, & poet. His poems included much natural history, including a statement of evolution and the relatedness of all forms of life. He was Charles' grandfather. He believed that a good public education should be available to women and lessons should include physical exercise, botany, chemistry, mineralogy, & experimental philosophy.
