Absolutely wonderful. This is the novel that I would have wanted to see defended on this year's Canada Reads.

READ: A book that was originally written in a different language: A Novel Bookstore by Laurence Cosse (from French) I made a note about this book on my phone 2 years ago, when someone mentioned it in the literary society at my undergrad. I didn't think about it much since, but recently I was scrolling through my notes and realized that it was written in French originally and would work perfectly for this prompt.

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything—instead, they “check out” large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store.

A wonderful love story about a girl in the Appalachian mountains. Very sad and gripping though.
