I have a sense of home life in the 1600's through Vermeer's dramatic style that immediately pullls me in. At first glance, a person viewing this painting might be tempted to walk by, but take some time to study it. It's interesting what you will see here.

Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid was painted by Jan Vermeer. The linear perspective helps the viewers to understand the depth and to become located in that space as if they are watching the woman writing the letter in that room. Linear perspective is an important technique to accomplish transparency as well as to establish relationship between the viewers and the medium. People see the reality through the paintings without awareness that they stay in front of a context.
Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid (c.1670). Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, 1632-1675). Oil on canvas. Gallery of Ireland. The firm stance of the statuesque maid acts as a counterweight to the lively mistress intent on writing her letter. The maid’s gravity is emphasized by her central position in the composition. In contrast, the mistress inclines dynamically against a compressed space. The mistress is painted in precise, meticulous strokes and the maid with a broad handling of the brush.

MET.When Jules Bache, who bought the picture in 1928 for $134,800, started assembling his collection in the 1920s, Vermeer was the most desired of the “three prime immortals” of the Dutch school. After the painting was completed, the support was manipulated to induce cracks. A black material, possibly ink, was rubbed into the cracks, and the surface was distressed and retouched in an attempt to simulate an old paint film.

Johannes Vermeer, a dutch artist, has painted this masterpiece known as “The Girl with a Pearl Earring.” We don’t know much about the girl in the portrait.

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Jan Vermeer The Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's masterworks. It is sometimes referred to as the "the Dutch Mona Lisa". Unfortunately, very little is known about Vermeer's works such as the identity of the girl in this portrait.
Artist: Johannes Vermeer Title: Girl with a Pearl Earring Year: 1632–1675 Current Location: Mauritshuis Brief Description: The painting is a tronie, the Dutch 17th-century description of a 'head' that was not meant to be a portrait. It depicts a European girl wearing an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and an improbably large pearl earring.
"The Girl With The Pearl Earring", painted in 1665 by Johannes Vermeer, has always been one of my favorite portraits
Girl With A Pearl Earring – Johannes Vermeer. Considered by many to be “the Dutch Mona Lisa” or the “Mona Lisa of the North”, this beautiful painting by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer features, well… a girl with a peal earring. The painting was completed around 1665 and is on display in the Mauritshuis Gallery in the Hague, the Netherlands
Which artist painted “Girl With a Pearl Earring? • Jean Millet • Johannes Vermeer • Thomas Cole • Giotto
The Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). Sometimes referred to as “the Dutch Mona Lisa”. Very little is known about Vermeer and his works and this painting is no exception. It isn’t dated and it is unclear whether this work was commissioned, and if so, by whom. In any case, it is probably not meant as a conventional portrait.

Girl with a Red Hat is a small painting by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, executed 1665–1666, in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.. It is one of a number of Vermeer's tronies -- depictions of models fancifully dressed that were not (as far as is known) intended to be portraits of specific, identifiable subjects.

Samuel van Hoogstraten, View of an interior, or The slippers, between 1654 & 1662, (Musée du Louvre)
Samuel Van Hoogstraten is sending us a moral message -- a pair of slippers left in the middle of the hallway and the keys in the door. It is hard to believe how tough he is on the poor girl for abandoning her post. The XIX century also had problems with Dutch minimalism; that's why they decided to add on that canvass a small dog and a seated female figure, both removed to show it just the way it is.

"The Goldfinch," in Dutch 'het Puttertje' was painted by Dutch artist Carel Fabritius in 1654. It inspired Donna Tartt's new novel of the same name.

Painting by Carel Fabritius THE GOLDFINCH I didn't think I liked this book at first but it's the type of story that stays with you, that you think about long after you've finished it and it haunts you until you come to realize what an amazing story it really is. It revolves around this stolen painting. Poor little bird. Tethered to its perch.
Carel Fabritius, Rembrandt's most gifted student, utilized fluent brushwork to create arguably the most famous bird in Dutch art history, "The Goldfinch,” in 1654. Inspired the current best selling book 'The Goldfinch' by Donna Tartt.
The Goldfinch (1654) by Carel Fabritius (1622-54) b. Netherlands. He painted this appealing picture of a goldfinch in the year of his death. It is an unforgettable image. Although the bird's perch is painted with precision, the bird itself is blurred and smudgy, as though at any moment it is about to attempt an escape. This is a bird quivering with desire, chained to earth, but longing for the sky.
