Life After Life: A Novel by Kate Atkinson. This story follows Ursula, born shortly before WWI in England. Through the course of the book it becomes clear that Ursula has a gift of foresight which results in multiple options for her life events. A very original story with wonderful characters who you end up caring for deeply.
Set in Greece, Scotland, and NYC, and unfolding over three summers in the lives of a Scottish family, this novel beautifully explores love in all its incarnations - romantic, familial, parental... - and how, even after overwhelming grief, we can heal, and not just survive, but thrive.
War Brides by Helen Bryan - just read the last page, and enjoyed this historical novel very much. Not a perfect read, but a satisfying one that took me to a village in Great Britain where five very different women come together to form unique bonds of friendship that could only grow out of the experiences of such a war as the one that rocked in the world more than sixty years ago. While the implausible ending might please some readers, I felt it was hurried and a bit frustrating.
