John Singer Sargent (American, 1856–1925). Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Phelps Stokes, 1897. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Bequest of Edith Minturn Phelps Stokes (Mrs. I. N.), 1938 (38.104) | The Stokes were married on August 25, 1895, and the portrait by Sargent was a wedding gift from James A. Scrimse. Sargent's first intention was to paint a single portrait of Edith, but then he decided to paint her with a Great Dane. When the dog was no longer available I. N. Phelps Stokes took his place.
