Rochester Castle was an important Royal castle which  protected England’s south east coast from invasion.   The first castle at Rochester On the Medway River in Kent   was built after the Norman Conquest.  It was besieged three times.  In 1264  Simon de Montfort’s Rebel Army entered the city to capture the castle causing tremendous damage.   A century later the castle was ransacked during the Peasant’s Revolt.
