Empress Theodora; 497-548; The Byzantine empress Theodora was the wife of the emperor Justinian I (reigned 527–565) and probably the most powerful woman in Byzantine history. Her intelligence and political acumen made her Justinian’s most trusted adviser and enabled her to use the power and influence of her office to promote religious and social policies that favoured her interests.
The name honors Orthodox Saint Tatiana who was tortured and martyred in the persecutions of Emperor Alexander Severus c.230 in Rome. Saint Tatiana is also considered a patron saint of students. Hence, Tatiana Day is now an official school holiday for students in Russia.
