Ed Gein was an American murderer and body snatcher. His crimes, committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety after authorities discovered Gein had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin.
Ed Gein, aka the Plainfield Ghoul, confessed to killing 2 women in 1957, and was sentenced to life in prison. Gein also had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and had home furnishings made from human skin and bones, a shoebox full of preserved female genitalia, bowls made of skulls, and a full-body suit made of flesh. His case influenced the creation of several fictional serial killers, including Norman Bates from Psycho, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Jame Gumb from The Silence of the Lambs.

HH Holmes' "Murder Castle": Holmes is said to have killed between 27 and 200 people. Holmes built a hotel at the end of the 18th century to capitalize on Chicago's World's Fair and its visitors. His "hotel" had over 60 rooms for guests, including alarms in each "prison room" in case a victim attempted to escape. The hotel was a labyrinth of trap doors, windowless rooms, torture chambers, staircases to nowhere and a basement morgue, crematory, and vats of acid for disposal.
