I've eaten these since I was a small kid. I think they're pretty much an Iowa thing. Man they are good!!!

I would use 1/2 pound less of the ham and 1/2 pound less of the ground beef and use one pound of pork to give it more flavor. It makes enough for a good 25-30 ham balls, so be aware of that before you make it!
