Richard Avedon- He was always able to capture people in their true nature and element. This is the kind of photographer I want to be.

"A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion". - Richard Avedon self portrait 1963 from Christian Hindemith
“A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.” -Richard Avedon [Credit - Richard Avedon Self-portrait, New York City, 1963]
Richard Avedon self portrait. Richard Avedon (5/15/1923-10/1/2004) was an American fashion & portrait photographer. Avedon did not conform to the standard technique of taking studio fashion photographs where models stood emotionless & seemingly indifferent to the camera. He showed models full of emotion, smiling, laughing, & in action in outdoor settings. Avedon died in San Antonio, Texas, of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was on an assignment for The New Yorker.
Richard Avedon (1923 – 2004) was an American photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century." Avedon was always interested in how portraiture captures the personality and soul of its subject. As his reputation as a photographer became widely known, he brought in many famous faces to his studio and photographed them with a large-format 8x10 view camera.

'I hate cameras. They interfere, they're always in the way. I wish: if I could work with my eyes alone.' Richard Avedon.
"And if a day goes by without my doing something related to photography, it's as though I've neglected something essential to my existence, as though I had forgotten to wake up. I know that the accident of my being a photographer has made my life possible." - Richard Avedon

The above picture,”Dovima with the Elephants” was taken by Richard Avedon at the Cirque d’hiver, Paris, in August 1955. This is the photo of Dovima, for whom the term ‘supermodel’ was coined. She was the most remarkable and unconventional beauty of her time. This image became one of the most iconic fashion photographs of the 20th century. The dress was the first evening dress designed for Christian Dior by his new assistant, Yves Saint-Laurent.

Dovima with the Elephants, 1955, Avedon: This stunning scene was taken to make a fashion statement, and Avedon truly revolutionized the field of fashion photography thereafter. Previously, fashion shots were very simple and plain. Avedon changed the game with his ability to show Dovima in an entirely unique and captivating setting. The point of the photo seems to contrast the delicacy of the female subject with the huge elephants. The woman is made to seem beautiful, strong, and fearless.

CONFIDENTIALLY, CARMEN. Next, Dovima (1927-1990). Photo Avedon. "Oh, what sweet, fond memories come back looking at these pictures! Suzy, Do-rothy Vi-rginia Ma-rie Horan (Dovima), Sunny and I were the four musketeers. Now, just think on this; in the 1940s there were no make up men to create a persona for a model. Dovima was an extraordinarily talented artist in real life - believe it or not she did miss her calling - but she knew how to use herself as a canvas. She personally applied, always with the steadiest of hands, her own 'doe' eye over the black Irish lashes that framed her memorable blue eyes." CARMEN

Beautiful #umbrella photo by Richard Avedon,
Whether photographing politicians, artists, writers, fashion models, or movie stars, Richard Avedon revolutionized the genre of portraiture. He rejected conventional stiff-and-staid poses and instead captured both motion and emotion in the faces of his subjects, often encapsulating their intrigue in a single charged moment. SFMOMA is proud to be the only U.S. venue for this retrospective that spans the artist's remarkable career. Featuring nearly 200 photographs along with a selection of vintage magazines, the exhibition presents work ranging from Avedon's earliest street scenes to his breakthrough 1950s Paris fashion pictures and the iconic celebrity portraits that brought him world renown. This in-depth retrospective reveals Avedon's singular ability to blur the lines between photojournalism, fashion photography, and fine art. Richard Avedon was an incredible photographer. He took this photo of Bob Dylan in Central Park, New York in 1965. #photography #bobdylan
Bob Dylan (1941 - by Richard Avedon) is an American musician, poet and artist whose position in popular culture is unique. Dylan started his musical odyssey in 1959 and much of his best known work is from the 1960s, when he became an informal documentarian and reluctant figurehead of American unrest.

Bob Dylan, musician, New York, 1965, edition, Richard Avedon. This photo seems to be about the life of a celebrity when they're not being a celebrity. Bob Dylan isn't surrounded by a crowd of people wanting his autograph, he isn't wearing anything special, and he isn't doing anything out of the ordinary. Instead, he looks like any other man that could be walking on the street. To me, this photo normalizes the life of a celebrity, making it easier for a viewer to feel connected to the celebrity.

He put a camera and the front and back of Audrey Hepburn, this was to see the Hat that he had designed. The colour scheme in this photograph is very bold and bright. It is black and white but the colours are manipulated a little. We can see the placing of the artificial lights due to the shadows on her hat.

Ezra Pound by Richard Avedon. Avedon was interested in portraiture's ability to capture personality. During sittings he would ask probing questions in an effort to evoke something that others could not. Pound was a major figure in the early modernist movement. After the extreme loss of life of WWI he lost faith in the West and blaming capitalism for the War, became a supporter of Hitler. He was arrested for treason in 1945. This picture was taken in 1958, the year he was released from prison.
