    Straight vanilla is where you went wrong. Natalie is right, you have to use water. I usually take a small pot, fill it most of the way with water, add cinnamon and/or vanilla (cinnamon's cheaper) and let it simmer on the stove. It smells amazing! You will have to do some pot scrubbing later on, though. But it does wonders for eliminating yucky kitchens smells.

    my mother used to do this all of the time when i was a kid. DEFINITELY MUST add water, though. just a few drops of vanilla (real) is all you need.

    I do this all the time and it works perfectly. I use pure vanilla extract not imitation, pour half the bottle into an old mug (it stains) and leave it for 15-30 min on 350. I never mix it with water and have never had it burn or make an awful smell.
