Lovely atmospheric photograph of Waterloo Place, London in 1899 by the Belgian photographer Leonard Misonne. Old London
London Town, Photographer Leonard, Vintage Photo
Lovely photograph of Waterloo Place, London in 1899 by the Belgian photographer Leonard Misonne. It looks as though this might picture some of the awful smog London encountered from the Industrial Revolution onward, as factories pumped out smoke and fumes.
Waterloo Place, London in 1899 by the Belgian photographer Léonard Misonne, 'Master of Light'
Waterloo Place, London, 1899 (photo by Belgian photographer, Leonard Misonne)
Léonard Misonne - London (1899) ‘London is enchanting. I step out upon a tawny coloured magic carpet, it seems, and get carried into beauty without raising a finger. The nights are amazing, with all the white porticoes and broad silent avenues. And people pop in and out, lightly, divertingly like rabbits; and I look down Southampton Row, wet as a seal’s back or red and yellow with sunshine, and watch the omnibus going and coming, and hear the old crazy organs. One of these days I will write about London, and how it takes up the private life and carries it on, without any effort.’ - Virginia Woolf, diary entry
London, 1899 by Leonard Misonne. Foggy Day in London Town anyone?
This is another photograph by the Belgian photographer Leonard Misonne and dates from 1899, it shows the view from Lower Regent Street junction with Waterloo Place looking south across Pall Mall to the Duke of York Column. The Guards Crimean War Memorial is in the centre and the Athenaeum Club is at top right. The building on the left was demolished in 1909 and replaced with Cox's Bank, that same building is now a hotel.
Beautiful photo love black and white.

In May, Oscar Wilde was released from Reading Gaol. In June, Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. In July, the Tate Gallery opened. In August, London got its first horseless taxicabs, and taxi driver, George Smith became the first Londoner charged with drunk driving that September. W. Somerset Maugham discovered that he was destined to be a writer, not a doctor, that year, when he published Liza of Lambeth. This is the year in pictures. Outside the Bank of England 1897 Horseless carriages would be a good thing because people were really starting to worry about horse poop. You can see why! Tandem bike. This reminds me of the old song.. 'Sadie, Sadie give me your answer do. I'm half crazy all for the love of you. It won't be a fancy marriage. I can't afford a carriage. But you'd look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.' Sung this to all my kids and now my grandkids. Love this song

This is a London woman in 1916. World War I gave women a more pronounced place in society and the workplace, which reflected in changes of dress. The previous hobble skirt became more bell-shaped and shorter, like this one, which made moving around much easier. Women were also now driving cars, which required further mobility.
