Madame Marsollier and Her Daughter Jean Marc Nattier (French, Paris 1685–1766 Paris) Madame Marsollier, the daughter of a minor functionary at court, was married, beneath her station, to a Parisian textile merchant whose shop was in the rue Saint-Honoré. Her husband later bought her a title and, because she was as vain and ambitious as she was beautiful, she came to be called "the velvet duchess."
