New Book Assata: In Her Own Words

  • The Sociological Cinema

This is Assata Shakur, who is widely known as a member of The Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army. She and fellow BLA member Zayd Malik Shakur were involved in a shooting, which left her wounded, her BLA brother dead, and one police officer dead. In prison, Assata was left in solitary confinement for months at a time and beaten almost to paralysis. She managed to escape in 1979, and in 1984, she moved to Cuba.

Assata Shakur Liberated From Prison

black panther - chic & powerful. Interesting propaganda image - women want to look like her (although perhaps without the rifle) and men just want her. I wonder where this woman is today?

Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur aka JoAnne Chesimard, the first woman ever to be added to the FBI's most wanted list. Read about this former Black Panther and member of the Black Liberation Army, her shootout with the New Jersey State Troopers, her time in prison, and her escape that has left her at large to this day. #AssataShakur

Thanks for sharing, Kelly. I might have seen or read about her back in the day, but I having difficulty recalling. That's one of the reasons that I keep updating this board that I call "my museum".

Afeni Shakur was rounded up along with the rest of the Panther 21 in 1970 as part of a government raid intended to break the Black Panther Party. She and the others were found innocent after spending several years in prison. In 1971, while incarcerated, she gave birth to Tupac Shakur.

NINA SIMONE ... nicknamed "High Priestess of Soul." She came to be known as the protest singer of the civil rights movement. She wrote "TO BE YOUNG, GIFTED and BLACK" borrowing the title of a play by her friend, Lorraine Vivian Hansberry, which became a popular anthem of the Civil Rights Movement.

From an issue of the Black Panther News from 1969. This is a poem written by Afeni Shakur (Tupac's mom) when she was a Black Panther.
