      Wolves were systematically killed in the West beginning in the late 1800's. A concentrated effort in the early 1900's finished the job with the last known wolf pack disappearing in 1926. With the loss of wolves the Elk population began to rise, causing over browsing of cottonwoods, willows and berry producing plants. This in turn altered the entire streamside ecosystem and associated wildlife, including birds, insects, fish, etc. Man, once again, reigning supreme.

    Despite its name, the maned wolf is not a wolf at all, nor is it a fox, coyote, or dog. It is the only member of the Chrysocyon genus, making it a truly unique animal, not closely related to any other living canid. One hypothesis for this is that the maned wolf is the last surviving species of the Pleistocene Extinction, which wiped out all other large canids from the continent.
