“It’s difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” — Anne Frank

Anne Frank. So wise beyond her years. It would have been such a joy to see what she could have accomplished if not for bigotry and hatred taking her life far too soon.

Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, ... Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries. Does my haughtiness offend you? ... You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. ... -- Maya Angelou

Helen Keller at age 66 - Helen Keller was both blind and deaf. But despite these disabilities, she became a skilled writer and speaker. “Once I knew only darkness and stillness. . . . My life was without past or future. . . . But a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living.”

I just bought this book for Joshua. He was talking about the Holocaust and reading Number the Stars. An incredible story. My great great grandparents were shot but my great grandpa had an amazing survival story. Good reading for a 10 year old.
