Eighth grader--Emily's--"I Believe in Art" poem in her writer's notebook earned her a "Mr. Stick of the Week" award. This poem served as a pre-write for her "This I Believe" essay that she and her fellow classmates are currently revising for their writing portfolios.

Start the new school year off strong, especially with techniques that make your kids love their writer's notebooks. One of my best tricks is to teach them how to draw Mr. Stick in the first week of school, then challenge them to create a page that celebrates this iconic character; 7th grader Jordan is already off and running with the idea!
