My sixth graders still do my original "Alpha-Genres lesson early on in their notebooks," and my seventh graders do a variation called "Alpha-Research Topics," which focus on different topics students are willing to research, assuming they know very little about the topic already. This is Scott's example. Here's the original lesson: http://corbettharrison.com/lessons/Alpha-Genres.htm See page two here: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/450852612667964402/

My students do a quick study of "Oedipus Rex" because I believe there are great allusions to it in Richard Peck's "The River Between Us." Here is one of my student's summary pages of the play.

7th grader Angel--I don't think he won this award last semester. He was determined, and his first set of words shows his determination. I give my winner five points of extra credit, a ticket to my big extra credit "lottery" award, and an extra credit prize from my bucket of cheap stuff, but their favorite prize is that their work is seen by fellow teachers on Pinterest. Good job, Angel. Vocab resources online: http://corbettharrison.com/Vocabulary.htm

Here an 8th grader tries to convince her group that the Pretty Little Liar books are much better than the TV show.
