"Lightness of Being": A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with her eyes closed. Photograph: Chris Levine: "During the shoot, there was a lot of bright light, noise, and each exposure took eight seconds, which is a long time to have to sit still. I wanted the Queen to feel peaceful, so I asked her to rest between shots; this was a moment of stillness that just happened."

British Royal Jewels. SIGH ... This miniature crown manufactured by R S Garrard in 1870 and featuring 1,187 diamonds, was worn by Queen Victoria for her official 1897 portrait. A statement from the Royal Collection Trust said that, perhaps because of its lightness, Queen Victoria favored this crown over any other in the last years of her life

The Small Diamond Crown of Queen Victoria, one of the British Crown Jewels. It was created in 1870 at the request of Queen Victoria, and designed to be worn with her mourning veil. It is made of silver and holds 1,187 diamonds, which are considered acceptable gemstones to wear during mourning.

King George V, Queen Mary and their children. - Edward VIII; George VI; Mary, Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood; Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester; Prince George, Duke of Kent; Prince John
Did you know? On this day in 1917 the British royal family changed their name of Hanover to Windsor. Anti-German sentiment during WWI caused George V to change his dynasty name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the House of Windsor. Older brother Prince Albert was in line for the throne, but died of pneumonia. George became successor and married his brother's fiancé.

Queen Elizabeth II - I think there will always be something comforting about QEII. I'm not a monarchist, just an aussie girl. So maybe its because she has been there on the back of all our coins, maybe because her picture used to hang on the wall at school and at girl guides. She's always just been there... Weird, but true.
